Polynomials
Today in class we start with metal math of polynomials as you know we do every morning and some others activities, anyway let's begin.

let's start with this question

1. Arrange term in alphabetical order with Constant last

okay let's write 4c + 7a + 3b as you see this question is mixed up so let's correct this terms
instead of writing 4c + 7a + 3b we write 7a + 3b + 4c.

2. Arrange the terms of each polynomial so that the powers of x are in
ascending order.

so we have this question 6x-3x2y+4-2x8

okay we get the question we start with which of the following has have a larger power. so we see 6x is with out power and -3x2y has a power of 2 , +4 is without variables and power and -2x8 has a power of 8 .
so which of the following has a larger power for i say we will start with -2x8 follow by 3x2y follow by 6x and 4
so we will write in this way -2x8-3x2y+6x+4 that's our answer.

so let's go with adding polynomials.

Look for the opposite terms
egg. -8n+3n+8n
OK lets find the answer lets start with -8n+8n we get 0n and we remain with +3n so our answer will look like this

-8n+3n+8n=3n

Translating Mathematical Expressions
Sorry if my post is late because i went to a Filipino language test.
First we did mental math. And then we finished answering the assignment sheet about TRANSLATING MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSIONS like

"Add 7 to the quotient of -9 and 3"
=>(-9/3)+7
=>(-3)+7
=>4"

TRY THIS...
1. THE SUM OF 6 TIMES 9 AND 7
2. THE SUM OF NINE AND 10 TIMES 80
3. THE SQUARE OF 6 DIMINISHED BY THE CUBE OF 2 DIVIDED BY THE SQUARE OF 4-2
4. 10 INCREASED BY THE QUOTIENT OF 7 AND 49
5. THE CUBE OF 6DECREASED BY THE PRODUCT OF 12 AND 20
6. THE SQUARE OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 20 AND 90
7. 4 LESS THAN 7 TIMES THE SQUARE OF 2
8. 100 TIMES THE SUM OF 4 AND 7
9. 5 DECREASED BY 8
10. 2 MORE THAN THE SUM OF 5 AND THE SQUARE OF 10

Miss Nicholson gave back the unit test that we had last week. And she gave an assignment but I'm not sure what is it i think that we need to write in a sheet of paper all the wrong answers in our Unit test and correct it but if this is wrong please leave a comment and correct me.

Math Blog (Oct 22 2007)
For class we Worked on Number phrases and word phrases, The questions asked were Questions like, Add -8 to the sum of -20 and 5 or Find the average of -10, -3, 8 and 17.we had to show our work. We also did a test on lose leaf which had questions on Dividing, adding, subtracting, and multiplying integers. we went over the list we had to sort into 4 categories which was a home work assignement.

That was a brief Explanation of what we did in class

Multiplying one negative number with a positive number produces a negative answer.


Ex. Simplify (-4) (+5) :

Since multiplication can occur in any order this is the same as (+5) (-4) and would produce an answer of -20.


There for (...) (-4) (+5) = -20


Multiplying two negative number together is more complicated ti understand.
Let's examine the pattern produced by the following to see if we can determine what will happen.



(+3) (-5) = -15
(+2) (-5) = -10
(+1) (-5) = -5
(0) (-5) = 0 Increases by 5
(-1) (-5) = +5
(-2) (-5) = +10
(-3) (-5) = +15


(NEGATIVE) (NEGATIVE) = POSITIVE


When multiplying two negative the result is positive. It is as follows:

-the number themselves multiply as usual, and
-the two negative signs multiply to produce a positive.




Ex. simplify (-3) (-4) :
(-3 ) (-4) = +12



Insummation, when multiplying two numbers with the same sign the result is positive. Wherea, When mutiplying two numbers with opposite signs the result is negative.



(+) (+) = +
(-) (-) = +
(+) (-) = -
(-) (+) = -

operations with signed numbers

combining terms
I'm working with numbers, question as :
5 + 8 = 13
7 - 4 =3
are straight forward. However if a question such as "6 - 9 =" presents itself we have a problem.

Let's examine this problem in terms of money. What if you had $6.00 and i had to pay out $9.00you would have to go into debt by $3.00. in other words you would still owe $3.00 (after giving up the $6.00 had). We will write this as -$3.00 using a minus in front of the number 3.

There for (...) 6 - 9 = 3

Ex. The following question can be read as :


2 - 6
*i have 2 * *and i owe 6*

combining these, results in owing 4.

There for (...) 2 - 6 = -4

Ex. How could we interpret the following?
-3 + 5 =
ANSWER : i owe 3 and i have 5. The result is I have 2.


There for (...)
-3 + 5 = 2 or +2
Any amount that i have is a whole number or a number with a plus sign in front of it. this is Known as a POSITIVE NUMBER (+)


Similarly, any amount that i owe would be written with a minus sign in front of it. Such a nimber is known as a NEGITIVE NUMBER.


The number zero (0) is a considered to be neither. Each item, whether it be an amount we have (positve value) or an amout we owe (negitive value) is called a Term. these question are all about Combining terms to come up with the end result.

Hi everybody im michael and im the blogger for today so wish me luck because im not good at doing blogs but I'll do my best.

I'll start, today in class all of us did the test that alisa mentioned in her blog it was all about what we have learned so far in class, the test wasn't very hard because it was only about INTEGERS so I didn't have to much a hard time doing it, any way after we finished doing the test Ms. Nicholson gave us extra work to do so we dont get bored or start making noise.

here's the extra work the she made us to do: SORT THE FOLLOWING WORDS INTO FOUR CATEGORIES IN YOUR SHEET, the categories are [+,-,x, and /], and also we have to use the integers 6 and -3 to write an example of each.

THE WORDS ARE: Difference between, Sum,
Divided by, Multiplied by,
Add, Subtract,
Minus, Product,
Times, Less than,
Increased by, Multiply,
Divide, Quotient,
Plus, More than,
Take away,

E.G. + -
The sum of 6 and -3 is 3 The difference between 6 and -3 is 9

6 multiplied by -3 is -18 6 divided by -3 is -2

Gr. 9 Math
Today in class we went over our Review worksheets on integers before our end of the unit test which is today. I will be posting up the answers for the worksheet for those who did not get the answers, or want to check over to see if they did they're work correct.


Before i post the answers, you should remember:
Rules for Multipying & Dividing:
( - ) x ( + )= ( - )
( - ) x ( - )= ( + )
( + ) x ( - )= ( - )
( + ) x ( + )= ( + )
The Order for PEDMAS:
PARENTHESIS
EXPONENTS
DECIMALS & MULTIPLYING
ADDING & SUBTRACTING
which ever comes first, you do.
Starting for left to right
ex. (9-4) + 4 x 6
(9-4) + 4 x 6
5 + 4 x 6
5 + 24
= 29

A number line if you need help on knowing the smaller numbers and larger numbers.








Answers to Review Worksheet on Integers:


1. Highlight the numbers that represent integers
1/2, .3333 , (-4 ), 32, +1/4, 50%, +18


2. State the opposite

-7 +7 -2 +2 +8 -8 -3 +3 +22 -22

3. Complete the chart


(if you do not understand, check the number line at the beginning to help you )




4. Circle the larger integer in each pair.









5. State the Integer described by each of the following:
a) 22°C above zero : +22
b) 9°C below zero: -9
c) 234m below sea level: -234
d) A loss of 13 points: -13
e) A profit of $1216: +1216

6. explain and show how you got the answer for +4 + (-3)


- State with 4 positives and 3 negatives
- ■ + ■ = 0 [ cancel zero models]
- Positive 1 is left over
- +4 + (-3) = +1



7. Write out the steps to solve (-16) - (-4)
Step 1: Change subtracting sign to adding
Step 2: Change -4 into +4
Step 3: Add -16 + (-4)
Step 4: take the signs from the larger digits. In this case its (-)
Step 5: Subtract -16 - 4 = -12
The answer for -16 - 4 = -12

8. Complete the table.















9. Use PEDMAS to solve the following:









Ms. Nicholson taught us a new clever trick.
Pick any number: (ex. 2)
Double it: ( 2x2 = 4)
add ten : (2+10 = 12)
subtract your original number: (12 - 2 = 10)
add fourteen: (10 + 14 = 24)
and divide by 6: (24/6=4)

your and answer should alway be four whether you picked a different number, it doesn't matter, it'll always be four.

Today in math class we didnt have much to do well we had a math review on our test that is going to be on friday instead of thursday the stuff we had to do was pretty easy but if you didn't get most of this stuff then you should look back at your notes that we had form when ms armstrong was here and then maybe you will get it. I do have some examples that i remember

(8)/(5)=
(9)+(-7)=
(7)-(14)=

Stuff like that well c you all tomorrow if some of you are at school anyways bye!!!

Grade 9 Math : Daily Blog
Today in class we talked about PEDMAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Divisions, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction)



Example :

(-5)2 - 10 / 5 + 4 x 10

+25 - 10 / 5 + 4 x 10


+25- 2 + 4 x 10

+25 - 2 + 40

+23 + 40

63



We also practiced PEDMAS using cards. The 4 green cards were Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction and 4 number cards. We mixed the them to make equations so we can practice PEDMAS.

PEDMAS Practice
Good morning!

I just finished correcting the sheets of the students who handed them in on Thursday. First, remember to SHOW YOUR WORK! If you get the incorrect answer and don't show how you arrived there, then we can't diagnose the problem so you don't make the same mistake again! At this stage, underlining the step you are working on is also very helpful.

For the students who did show their work, I can see that you are following the correct order of operations (PEDMAS)- WONDERFUL!- but arithmetic errors are leading you down the wrong road. Use your flip booklets to review what to do when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers.

I found some websites in Ms. Armstrong's binder that can give you extra practice:

Parentheses - Brackets

Exponents - (5)(5)(5) = 53

Division - 6 / 3 = 2
Multiplication (first come, first served) - 6 + 6 + 6 = 18 - 6 x 3 = 18

Addition - 1 + 1 = 2 (verbally, "one plus one equals two")
Subtraction (first come, first served) 1 - 1 = 0 ( verbally, "one minus one equals zero")

In class we took notes:

Order of Operations:

-Anthmetic operations(x, ,-,+) must be solved in a particular order. We can use the acronym "PEDMAS" to help remeber the order. Brackets/Parenthesis hold an operation together and bracket holed a number.
Rules:-Evalute expressions within parenthesis first (brackets) P ( )
-Evaluate expressions with exponents next
-Multiply and Divide from left to right in orded of what comes first M/D
-Add and Subtract from left to right in order of what comes first A/D



Here are some examples of what you have to do.

Grade 9 Math : Daily Blog

Sorry if this isn't the best blog because it's the first one of this year and it's the FIRST one I'VE ever done too.

Well, I think I should start talking about what happened today in class because that's what I'm supposed to be talking about but I don't seem to be doing that.

Okay, well, here it goes! =)

Well, today in class, we talked about who would be the first people to do the blog and what to do.
After that, we corrected the two worksheets we got the week before. One was on multiplying integers and the other was on dividing integers.
While we were correcting, Ms. Armstrong did a few sample questions. She gave a brief mesage about number patterns. It wasn't really something we should put in our binders or take notes about it but I think we might be talking about number patterns later on in the year.
Anywho, she explained the difference between brackets and parenthesis. Here are the notes about brackets and parenthesis :

* Brackets hold an integer together
example : (9)(-3) which means 9 x -3 ( nine times negative three )
* Parenthesis hold an operation inside
example : (9-3) which means 9 - 3 ( nine minus three )
* If there is no space in between variables/numbers, it means multiplication
example : (9x)(-3) ( nine times "x" times negative 3 )

We will be working more on brackets later on in the year. ( Hint Hint ) These notes down here about multiplying negative and positive integers :

* If you have an even number of negative integers, the answer will have a positive sign

example : (-5) (-3) (-7) (+1) (-3) = even number of negatives

ANSWER : +315

* If you have an odd number of negative integers, the answer will have a negative sign

example : (-5) (+3) (-7) (+1) (-3) = odd number of negatives

ANSWER : -315

That's basically all we talked about in class today. Hope that that was informative enough.

The midpoint of a segment.

Excellent job annotating class notes. Use of diagrams and colour adds to the readers comprehension.

4) What did you think of the persons work?
I think this persons work was very descriptive. This person used many pictures for examples and had a short descriptions in each of the pictures, which I think is very helpful. The persons explanations and instructions are clear and easy to understand. I think this persons work is very good.

The topic was RATIONAL and IRRATOINAL NUMBERS.

I think the reason that it was introduced into the HALL OF FAME is because it's very clear and understandable.

Hall of fame assignment
In this assignment I had to choose the best hall of fame post in the hall of fame list. So the one I chose was "square root and perfect squares", By Julie Rose The post was about square roots and perfect squares. I chose this one because She uses very nice pictures it is well organized it is an easy post to understand, so if I wanted to learn perfect squares or square root I would be able to. This post was entered into the hall of fame for its detail and organization, and some other things. So, i think that was the best post in the hall of fame.

THe person wrote about Number Patterns and what they talked about in class.

She did a good job and it was very informative. People said that it was "in depth with what happened in the class."

4) What did you think of the persons work?

She did a great job and she used a good amount of color. There were good diagrams and she showed what the teacher had put on the board. I think that she did a really good job. She is definately POST HALL OF FAME WORTHY =)

The way she used the colors to show which were the answers and questions was very clever, it's organized wonderfully so the one viewing the post would know which was which. The use of images are also helpful.

The title of the post is Exponentials & Logarithms --a trick for students; a treat for teachers by Jhoann.
2. What is the math topic that the person was writing about?
The topic the student was talking about was Exponentials & Logarithms. This student was finding the area of triangle ABC.
3. What reasons were given for inducting this post into the hall of fame?
Amazing detail and effort. Colour Illustrations, clear explanations and detail. Obvious that student invests a lot of hard work and time.
4. What did you think of the persons work
I say it was very well done! This person added a lot of information on solving the questions, added a lot of great diagrams, and having different colours was a very excellent touch to the persons post. Even though i do NOT understad any of the math the person was talking about, It was very nice to read over and look at. I would've voted this person to the hall of fame also. Kudos to their hard work.

I bet that person worked very hard . I can Tell they put a lot of time init because their is lorst information and i like the use of color and all the pictures. There is also at the bottom of the post words that run off the page and run back around leave from left and coming from the right , i thought that was nice.
